Options abound: Few short-term courses to make a career in IT

Short-term certificate courses in varied domains of information technology (IT) and computing offer professionals an opportunity to develop their knowledge relevant to industry needs. The courses, chiefly offered by private autonomous institutes across the country, are changing the dynamics of learning. Some courses need students to have a science background as a prerequisite while most others are inter-disciplinary. Each course may be pursued at the beginner's level and depending on students' interest and ability to grasp the concepts, they can progress to higher levels. Here are a few courses students can consider. 

COMPUTER LANGUAGES 

Almost all computer training institutes offer courses in computer languages starting with C, C++, C sharp, Java and Oracle. Certificate programmes in Java and Oracle, following internationally recognised curricula, complete with online exams. 

ANDROID APPS 

The mobile apps programme is meant for those who understand Java programming. Android, backed by Google Inc, is a growing open source mobile device platform, which is powered by the Linux operating system. Students are trained to develop frameworks using C++ Java and XML. With more users wanting to access their applications from a variety of devices, Microsoft introduced Windows 8, which allows developers to build Windows Store apps using C #, helping students learn to leverage a common platform to link all devices. 

NETWORK SECURITY CISCO

The Industrial Networking Specialist has modules dealing with setting up internal and external communicating systems. The cyber security certification is gaining importance with the rising number of hacking incidents. 

DATA ANALYTICS 

The SAP certification is one of the most valued specialisations since it has comprehensive programmes on IT applications for business.

The JAVA Certification Exam (OCWCD, Web Component Developer Certification) may be one of the toughest online exams to crack, but conquering such challenges comes naturally to Siddhant Keshwani. This 16 year old, an Oracle certified professional, became one of th e youngest ever to pass the advanced JAVA certification exams with 92% in OCWCD, thus becoming an advanced JAVA programmer. Siddhant, who was born on September 7, 1998, had started learning Logic Development and C Programming at a young age. After learning core JAVA, he appeared for the certification exam, considered to be one of the toughest exams even for engineering students! Siddhant had also cleared his Oracle Certification OCP when he was 12 year old (in Class VI). He further developed his interest in programming and thought of selecting JAVA as his first choice of programming language, which offers excellent features like open source community . 

When he was in Class VII, he cleared his OCPJP certification and was awarded by Prof SC Sahasrabudhe, director of Dhirubhai Ambani Institute of ICT, at an awards ceremony. Born with a creative bent of mind, Siddhant had decided at a young age to make constructive use of computers and train under the best. He says, "We have to keep learning and be updated with latest trends. Bookish knowledge is not enough."

Industry, academia should be in sync, says C++ founder

PUNE: There is a need for better collaboration between the academia and the industry, stressed Bjarne Stroustrup, founder of the programming language C++, in an exclusive chat with the TOI on Saturday. He said both parties can work in sync to create industry-ready professionals.

"I firmly believe in a multi-disciplinary approach during professional studies and also during the entire span of a person's career. One should be keen to take up new subjects as and when required," said he Stroustrup. "If possible, even teachers should be exposed to industry experiences every once a while."

Stroustrup was in the city to kick off the annual tech-lecture series at Persistent Systems with a talk on 'Modern C++ Style', which was watched by 3,000 students from 43 colleges and 1,800 professionals from Persistent and five other companies.

Apple suffered a temporary service outage

Apple has suffered a temporary service outage that included the iTunes Store and Mac App Store. The outage began just before 5 a.m. EDT. Apple says the problem was caused by a DNS error.
The Apple - Support - System Status page currently shows the App Store, iTunes Store and Mac App Store as being "unavailable for all users". The iBooks Store "may be unavailable for all users".

Google Shutting Down Google Code

Google Code is the next casualty in the recent pipeline of Google cleaning up its drive of fading projects and services. Google Code started in 2006 is an open source community for developers to host their code. But the recent surge in popularity of GitHub and other open source code hosting and VMS services, developers have been migrating their projects from Google code to these newer services.
Starting today, Google Code will stop accepting new projects and Google Code finally will shut down on Jan 25, 2016, announced via a blog post Bidding farewell to Google Code by Chris DiBona, Director of Open Source. Chris writes:
“Beginning today, we have disabled new project creation on Google Code. We will be shutting down the service about 10 months from now on January 25th, 2016. Below, we provide links to migration tools designed to help you move your projects off of Google Code. We will also make ourselves available over the next three months to those projects that need help migrating from Google Code to other hosts.”
